Democratisation in the 3D Graphics Industry

The term "democratise"  is defined as "making something available for all people and to make it possible for all people to understand". What in the world does it have to do with the 3D industry? Lets delve into that.

The democratisation of the 3D Graphics industry refers to the readily available programs like Maya that allow people to make their own 3D graphics and models. It is a game-changer for the industry. While big animation companies sometimes use their own programs tailored for specific projects, programs like Maya have the capability to create high quality animations on laptops and home computers (if the rendering process doesn't crash the device). 


This available technology allows freelancers to produce a higher quality product and for individuals in the industry to work from home as opposed to having to go into the studio and work. New implementations inside these available technologies allows artists to visualise what they want and to make it. Lighting had always been difficult in animation but these new implementations allow for photorealistic shadows and light bouncing. This allows whoever is producing this content to not only make quality and realistic content but to also please their client with the best work possible.



Monsters University was the first Pixar film to use Global Illumination which is a new lighting technology that allows of realistic shadows and light bouncing.

What does all this technology being available for the public do to the industry?
While the 'power to the people' mentality is good this means that studios and production companies must change to way their work flows and mindsets. But is that a bad thing? This technology being available for the public means that artists can pick it up and create something that the studios maybe hadn't thought of. This leads to companies outsourcing the work to artists or even hiring them to be part of the company. This creates competition and overall better content gets produced. So give the artists the tools of the trade and it will benefit the industry in the years to come and will even lead to more innovation.
